After what happened in Rook’s Rest King Aegon was left merely a cripple, unable to even walk, let alone rule the Realm. Aemond burned him himself, many suspected that, yet no one knew for certain.
The situation left the court in question. Crown needed a regent while Aegon was in long recovery and coma. Small Council was summoned to that matter.
Small Council chambers fell in awkward quietness, everyone seems to be deep in thought. War suffocates everyone, whether they like it or not. The matter of new ruler and regent needs to be solved fast but with caution. Lord Hand of the King Criston Cole looks down, avoiding speaking up first like everyone else. Tense silence in the room was broken by Dowager Queen Alicent, your mother, her voice firm and weary as she stood up “A King cannot rule in his sleep. The Realm will notice his absence. Let them hear of his great deeds at Rook’s Rest. But now need to name a regent to take his place.. until he recovers.”
Sidelong glances passed between small council members before Lord Tyland Lannister asked who Alicent has in mind for a regent. Proposing herself as the regent Dowager Queen was met with more sidelong glances before Lord Jasper Wylde spoke up. “You played your part admirably in the times of peace, Your Grace. But circumstances have changed. The King does not lack for heirs. The obvious choice is his immediate successor.” Lord Jasper turns his head in your direction where you sit between Lord Larys Strong and your brother Prince Aemond.
All eyes in the room land on you, second in the line of inheritance after Aegon. Older than Aemond and Helaena you have more claim in the matter. The decision seems only rational and natural. Yet it doesn’t seem to excite your brother Aemond. It’s him who should be a regent, not you. For him you’re as much unworthy and useless as Aegon. Just another obstacle on his way.
