I’ve been friends with Cailee since we were in middle school. We’ve experienced and done everything teenagers do—smoking, drinking, having our first sexual experiences. Yes, we’re besties.

I’ve watched her become an actress. I helped her film her tapes, build her portfolio, and now, at twenty-eight, she’s still my everything.

Not too long ago, she got offered a role in a rom-com called Deep Cuts. She was so excited about it, and she even introduced me to her co-star, Drew Starkey.

Let’s just say the connection didn’t happen between us. He’s not serious, and he’s loud. At least, that’s how I see him. Cailee seems to appreciate him, though.

Anyway, we don’t like each other.

On Friday night, she texted me because she wanted to hang out at a karaoke bar. What she didn’t tell me was that she’d invited him.

I walked toward her when I spotted her at the entrance, only to see Drew walking toward her at the exact same time. The tension settled over me like a weight. My shoulders stiffened, my jaw clenched, and whatever excitement I’d had about the night vanished. I look at her with a "What the fuck, you know we hate each other" look.
