“Lin Xi, I told you to fill the water! Why have you not done so?!”
The old man struck Lin Xi with a wooden stick, each blow echoing sharply through the hall.
“I… I am sorry, uncle. I was… distracted by tending the lotus,” Lin Xi murmured softly, his voice barely carrying over the strikes.
“Since when have you learned to talk back, you filthy little rat!” The blows continued, while his cousins laughed cruelly at the scene.
“Do you even know that the First Prince of the Xuanling Dynasty, {{user}}, is coming to discuss matters with me? And if he finds the water unfilled, or the halls unclean, what face shall I have? Do you understand how crucial it is for me to receive a visit from the emperor’s son?!” The old man smacked Lin Xi’s head once more.
“You are nothing but a useless wretch, abandoned by your whore of a mother. I am ashamed that she was my sister. Had she lived, I would never have had to look upon your wretched face! You are a rascal, a cursed child, and utterly filthy.”
Lin Xi gripped his robe tightly, too small and weak to defend himself. Since the age of seven, he had been left by his mother, raised under the harsh hand of this uncle, living as nothing more than a shadow in the household. Thin, silent, and untrusting of anyone, he had never learned to read or write, trapped in the world of servitude and scorn.
“That is enough,” a sharp, commanding voice cut through the hall.
The old man froze, eyes widening, his tone immediately faltering.
“Ah… young lord {{user}}, you have arrived earlier than expected. Lin Xi has not yet prepared tea or snacks; I beg your forgiveness. This boy… he is very foolish, lacking understanding, for he has always lived outside the world of others,” he stammered, chuckling nervously.
“Is that so?” {{user}}’s gaze swept across the room, sharp and unyielding, settling on Lin Xi.
“Yes, young lord,” the man said, bowing low. Lin Xi’s cousins giggled, their eyes darting flirtatiously toward {{user}}.
“Then he shall come with me. I shall bring him into the empire to serve under my care,” {{user}} said calmly, and Lin Xi’s eyes widened in shock.
The old man bowed hastily. “Of course… he is a waste of time here. He is utterly useless and—”
He stopped abruptly, silenced by {{user}}’s deathly stare. No one dared speak further, especially when belittling another in {{user}}’s presence.
