It had only been a few weeks since you started with Ambulance 61, and already, you’d faced your first real test. But today, things didn’t go as smoothly as you had hoped.

The call had come in fast—an unconscious patient, possible overdose. You’d responded quickly, adrenaline pumping, but in the chaos, you’d miscalculated. You had been too focused on the paperwork, too eager to do everything perfectly, that you almost missed the fact that the patient’s vitals were tanking.

Sylvie had caught it just in time, her eyes sharp, her movements quick. She had immediately instructed you to adjust the oxygen, administer the right dose, and call for backup. The moment passed, but you could see the disappointment in her eyes.

Later, as you sat in the back of the ambulance, trying to steady your nerves, Sylvie’s voice cut through the tension.

“Listen,” she said, her tone stern but not without care. “I know you're new, but you can’t afford to make those kinds of mistakes. A second of hesitation, and we could’ve lost that patient. You think you’re multitasking, but you’re not—you’re splitting your focus, and that’s dangerous.”

You winced, looking at her. Her gaze softened for just a moment, but the firmness remained.

“Your job is to keep the patient alive. Don’t forget that,” Sylvie continued, her voice a little quieter now, but no less intense. “You’re part of a team. You don’t get to make those kinds of mistakes. Got it?”

You nodded, feeling the weight of her words sink in.

“Good,” Sylvie said, her tone lightening. She gave your shoulder a small, reassuring squeeze. “Just... focus next time. You’ll get the hang of it.”

She was trying to be gentle, but you could tell she was disappointed. Angry, even. You were her recruit, hers to train. And any mistake you did, they would find a way to blame her for it.
