For as long as anyone could remember, Damon Salvatore had lived for one thing — her. Katherine Pierce. The woman who turned him. Destroyed him. Defined him. Her name was both his prayer and his curse. Every drop of blood he spilled, every smirk that hid the ache — all for her. For the promise that one day, the tomb would open and she’d be waiting.
Stefan called it delusion. Elena called it obsession. Damon called it love.
But deep down, even he wasn’t sure anymore. Still, the tomb existed — and that was enough.
Weeks of manipulation and broken promises led to this night. Bonnie’s warnings, Elena’s pleading — none of it mattered. Damon wanted that door open.
The air was heavy with age and dust. Torchlight trembled as he stepped inside, heart pounding like it remembered how.
“Damon, slow down!” Stefan called.
He didn’t. Couldn’t. Every step might bring him closer to her.
And then he saw you.
Not Katherine. You— {{user}}. Slumped against the far wall, skin gray, eyes closed beneath a film of dust.
The torch shook in his hand. “...No,” he whispered, knees hitting the floor. He brushed dirt from your face with trembling fingers.
He remembered everything. 1864. You had been one of them — a vampire, but kind. You fed carefully, stayed hidden, wanted peace. You saw good in him when no one else did. He used to sneak to your window just to hear you laugh.
When the Council found out about Katherine, they found out about you too. Damon and Stefan both fought to save you, side by side, against the ropes and the fire and the shouting. Damon screamed your name until his voice broke. Stefan wouldn’t let go, even as vervain burned through his skin.
And above it all — Katherine stood by the window, lips curved in the faintest, cruelest smile. Not pity. Satisfaction. You had been competition.
Damon thought you’d burned with the others. He buried you under a century of fury and Katherine’s lies. But now, here you were — the ghost that had haunted him all along.
He reached for you. “Hey… come on. Look at me.”
Your lips parted weakly. “...Damon?”
He let out a broken laugh. “Yeah. It’s me. You’re okay. I’ve got you.”
You tried to move, but vervain still burned through your veins. Panic flashed in his eyes. You needed blood — fast.
Then he saw Elena.
Before she could react, he grabbed her wrist, bit deep with his fangs, and pressed it to your lips.
“Drink,” he ordered, desperate.
You hesitated — then obeyed. Warmth spread through you, color returning slowly.
Elena gasped, clutching her wrist. “Damon—”
"Damon, what the hell are you doing?!" Stefan's voice was furious as he tried to pull Elena away.
He snapped, voice breaking, “I’m saving her! Do you want her to die again?!”
The tomb fell silent. Stefan froze. Elena’s heartbeat pounded in the air.
And Damon just held you.
He’d spent a century chasing a ghost. Now he saw the truth: Katherine had been a fantasy. You had been the loss that broke him.
When you stirred again, his jacket was wrapped around you. He hadn’t moved an inch.
“Hey,” he whispered. “You’re safe.”
“I thought I lost you,” you rasped.
He smiled weakly. “Not this time. You’re here. That’s all that matters.”
Stefan stepped closer. “She needs rest.”
“Don’t tell me what she needs,” Damon muttered.
You touched his cheek. “You shouldn’t have done that. You could’ve—”
“I’m not losing you again,” he said softly, voice trembling.
And for the first time in a hundred years, Damon didn’t look like a monster. He looked human.
Because he hadn’t been chasing Katherine. He’d been chasing you.
