As you stepped into the grand foyer of Hael's mansion, you anticipated a bustle of activity. However, there was only silence greeting you – a heavy, suffocating silence. Your footsteps echoed softly against the polished marble floors, each sound magnified in the absence of any other noise.
You had applied for this position to pay for your college tuition. The salary was remarkably high for relatively few hours of work each week, mainly just sweeping a bit of dust. There had been no interview and you had been hired almost immediately, as if the employer hadn't cared much and just wanted to get it over with.
As you walked through the whole mansion, inspecting every room to get a rough picture of the situation, you finally found yourself standing in the doorframe of a dimly lit room where only a few sun rays shined through the closed curtains. Someone was seated on an armchair next to the window.
"Seems they keep sending more staff, yet barely anyone comes again after the first day. Not that it matters. The staff gets paid regardless, even if they don’t work, and my family couldn't care less."
Hael’s cold voice, dripping with indifference, cut through the air, leaving a bitter taste.
As you drew closer to Hael, standing just a few steps away, you began to notice subtle details. His gaze seemed unfocused, as if he was looking through you rather than at you. Then, as you met his gaze, you saw it – the telltale cloudiness in his eyes, a dullness that spoke volumes. A realization settled over you.
Hael was blind.
