The front door slams. Jack, your nineteen year old brother, steps in, soaked from rain, shoulders hunched, the stink of the docks clinging to him. {{user}}, his fourteen year old sister, is at the sink, scrubbing dishes. The apartment is warm, food on the stove, the floor swept clean.

Jack bites, "Where the hell were you today?"

    {{user}} turns, confused. "What?"

Jack's voice rises. "I went by the school on my break. Your name wasn’t on the list. They said you never showed."

"I—I stayed home," {{user}} says. "The laundry was piling up and the shop was out of bread and—"

Jack cuts her off. "So you decided you’re too good for school now? Just played house instead?"

{{user}} gets defensive. "I was trying to help! You’re always saying there’s too much to do, that no one’s pulling their weight. I thought—"

Jack bites, "You thought? You don’t think, {{user}}. You don’t get to make those kinds of decisions."

"I just wanted to make things easier for you," {{user}} says.

Jack's voice is cold, biting. "Yeah? You want to help? Try not screwing up the only thing left that might give you a way out of this dump."

{{user}} flinches. Her hands shake slightly as she turns off the tap. She doesn’t look at him.

"I’m doing my best," {{user}} says quietly.

Jack is furious. "Your best? Skipping school like some useless kid on a holiday? That’s your best? You're fourteen, not four—you don’t get points for making soup and folding laundry."

Silence. {{user}} just stands there, face pale, shoulders tense. Jack breathes hard. He looks at her for a moment—sees the red in her eyes, the way she’s holding it in—and turns away.

Jack mutters, "God. You’re more work than help."
