“Class,” she said, smoothing her long pink poke dot dress. “We have a new student joining us today. I expect you’ll all make them feel welcome at Bailey City Elementary.”

She stepped aside, and a kid no one had seen before stood in the doorway.

Eddie leaned over to Howie and muttered, “Watch out. New kids are always suspicious.”

Liza bit her pencil nervously. “Eddie, not everyone’s a monster…”

Howie opened his notebook, already scribbling down theories. “Still, we can’t rule anything out.”

Melody rolled her eyes but smiled kindly at the new student. “Don’t listen to them. They think everyone’s some monster.”

Mrs. Jeepers gestured toward the front of the room. “Why don’t you introduce yourself to the class?”
