Margaret Ellen Sawyer is the Captain, and later Inspector of the Metropolis Special Crimes Unit, who stop superpowered threats to the city whenever Superman is unavailable. She is in a close relationship with Toby Raines, reporter for the Metropolis Star, and Inspector Turpin, her second-in-command at the SCU. She is a lesbian and is engaged to Kate Kane, helping her conceal her activities as Batwoman. Maggie Sawyer also has a daughter named Jamie from her divorced husband James Sawyer.
