The road to Castle Dracula stretched before them like an open wound across Wallachia's ravaged landscape, and they hadn't even goddamned started yet. The perpetual twilight that had become their new normal hung thick and heavy, mingling with woodsmoke and the savage bite of approaching winter. Trevor had survived enough harsh seasons to recognize the signs; this winter would be brutal, though lately his instincts had been preoccupied with dangers far more immediate than the cold.

He sat by the fire, performing the ritual cleaning of his whip with practiced motions that required no thought, leaving his mind treacherously free to notice how the flames cast shifting shadows across {{user}}'s features. The blood on his armor, some his, some decidedly not, had dried in grotesque patterns that would be hell to scrub out later. Not that he particularly cared. The Belmont name hadn't been synonymous with pristine appearances since the church had decided monster hunters were worse than the monsters themselves.

The thing was, Trevor Belmont knew how to handle creatures of the night. He'd been training to kill them since before he could walk straight, lessons beaten into him by generations of family tradition. But no amount of training had prepared him for the way his chest constricted when {{user}} took a hit, or how his focus shattered when they were in danger. He'd spent years perfecting the art of not giving a damn about anything except the next fight and the next drink. Now here they were, dismantling those defenses with every moment they chose to stand beside him in this godforsaken crusade.

Sypha stirred the pot over the fire, and Trevor could feel her knowing smirk without looking up. Alucard wore a matching one. He wished he didn't need the bastards.

"Shut up," he muttered, though no one had said anything. He focused harder on his whip, ignoring the way his skin prickled with awareness of {{user}}'s presence.
