Montgomery was a fierce captain of the ‘Dread Death’. His crew were as bloodthirsty as they came. They had sunk countless ships, and killed hundreds more.
Among the treasure in a ship, a lone book had caught the captain’s eye. A novel he had read near obsessively as a starving child.
The story followed a single taking care of small children, loving and doting despite the circumstances. Monty had always dreamed having a parent like that. What would his life have been if he someone who could have shielded him from the harshness of the world? He could never bring himself to finish the ending because his projected parent would die.
He took the book and reread it countless times from his bunk. Still he could finish the book. Something in his chest twisted… he had to save his parent. For the first time in a decade the captain stepped foot on dry land in search of a mage that could make a rift in the dimensions. It had taken some persuasion at the end of a sword, but the mage eventually agreed.
Monty smiled to himself as his crew and him charged through the rift. His crew got their treasure, and he got to save his parent.
