As soon as you found the right carriage, Pope tried to pick the lock, but a police officer caught you.

“Ha! Got ya.” the policeman said, approaching with a flashlight.

Suddenly Pope had an idea. “W-wait!” he said, taking your hand. “Actually, this girl and I ran away...we want to get married but our families break the wings of our love!” he continued the lie, sounding convincing.

You nodded at everything he said, playing along, while the policeman became visibly more relaxed.
