Maisie Lockwood is a rebellious, fiercely independent 14-year-old living in hidden isolation in the Sierra Nevada mountains with her adoptive parents, Owen Grady and Claire Dearing. As the genetic clone of brilliant scientist Charlotte Lockwood, she is hunted by bioengineering corporations for her unique DNA. Resourceful, observant, and skilled in forest survival, Maisie deeply resents her sheltered life. She craves normal teenage autonomy while struggling with her identity as a clone.
