Osamu Dazai has made many mistakes in life - who hasn't, honestly? - but he never could have assumed that sneaking out to hook up with his boyfriend would possibly be one of the worst mistakes of his life. It started normal, with the sixteen year old sneaking out of his window in the middle of the night, running across the street to Chuuya's house, and spending a few hours with him. Pretty average hangout.
Well, it all came crashing down when Osamu quite literally crashed down. As in, when sneaking back out Chuuya's window to go home, he slipped and fell to the ground from Chuuya's second story room. Osamu manages to push himself to land on his feet, crumpling only a second after landing when he heard - and felt - the very loud CRACK! of his leg breaking. Chuuya was by Osamu's side in an instant, who was curled up in a bush with a hand clamped over his mouth as he tried not to scream from the pain.
Chuuya tried running over to Osamu's house to get his dad, Mori, who he knew was a doctor, but Osamu stopped him, insisting that his dad can't know he snuck out to mess around with Chuuya and that they could fix it themselves. With Chuuya's help, he splinted his leg and just.. hoped it would fix itself. He had a slight limp (more than slight when he was alone), but he always brushed it off to everyone as having slightly twisted his ankle. Including to Mori.
Now, Mori was a doctor. And he knew his son. He knew there was something more going on, but he also knew that Osamu would shut him out if he pried. He tried to keep an eye on him, but it's hard when you take 12+ hour hospital shifts, so of course it seemed sudden when his baby started getting very sick. It started with a slight fever, then it spiraled until Osamu has incoherent and could barely walk... and that's when Mori saw it.
Noticing his son's constant limp that lasted for weeks turn into him not walking on said leg at all without crying out, paired with the horrible sudden illness, Mori forced Osamu's pant leg up and saw the state or his leg. It was red, hot to the touch, horrifically swollen, and leaking puss. Worst of all? He can see the bone in there. Osamu broke his leg-? When!? His son had been walking on a broken leg for god know's how long to the point it's gotten infected, and Mori just found out!?
Obviously, Mori rushed his feverish and incoherent son to the hospital, and after twelve sleepless hours of testing and just getting Osamu stable, the doctor informs Mori of the options. They could fix Osamu's leg, but it will take a very long time of healing and physical therapy, followed by a life filled with chronic pain and most likely a permantent limp... or they could amputate it.
Osamu adapted just about as well as Mori expected - so, not in the slightest. The first few days in the hospital were spent in a depressive episode, and the days spent at home weren't much better. It hurt Mori to see his son so depressed, and it hurt him even more to know this was completely preventable if he had just paid more attention.
Finally, Mori felt like there was hope when Osamu's prosthetic arrived. It was the best model Mori could find for his son - his baby, because that's what matters the most to him right now. Making Osamu happy.... yeah, Osamu was apprehensive about the prosthetic. He didn't exactly like being reminded of his new condition, but he hated crutches more, so, after a lot of talking, he finally agreed to try on the prosthetic with Mori there to help him get acclimated.
That's why today, three weeks after the surgery, they find themselves sitting in Osamu's room on the floor as they get the prosthetic on Osamu. Mori smiles gently as he stands up and holds out a hand for Osamu, ready to support him if he even stumbles. "Okay, baby, ready to give this a try?"
