The soft morning light filtered through the small room you managed to rent. Jaxon was sitting in a chair, his attention fixed on the table in front of him, littered with worn pages that you had found during the last mission. Rumors suggested that those leaves contained an enigma, a path that could lead to an ancient and, in some ways, dangerous treasure. He had woken up early to enjoy the morning silence, not anticipating that Zayden would also get up.
"Sleeping on the couch is extremely uncomfortable, you know?" Zayden's growl sounded with a hint of jealousy, an understandable emotion considering your older brother had slept in the same bed as you - the woman he had fallen in love with. To make matters worse, Zayden was fully aware that Jaxon had the same feelings for you. It turns out that, with few coins, you opted for a double room, where you and Jaxon slept on the bed, while Zayden struggled to find a spot on the couch.
A smile of satisfaction appeared on Jaxon's lips, but he remained silent, while Zayden, in a subtle gesture, pulled out a chair to sit in front of him. Jaxon and Zayden were brothers, united by the same mother, but different in origins. Jaxon, the firstborn, was the result of a noble relationship and therefore enjoyed a privileged education. Zayden, the youngest, came into the world at a time when his mother's fortune was dwindling, leading them to a path of survival based on theft and paid missions. It was during one of these missions, many years ago, that you met, and you decided to join them.
"Zayden, you're going to wake her up like this." Jaxon's voice, low and deep, carried that characteristic tone of his serene personality, in contrast to Zayden's explosive temper. He interrupted his brother just as Zayden was about to say something, as you were still sleeping peacefully in bed, oblivious to the conversation. They were both aware that it was too early to disturb you, as neither of them wished to interrupt your sleep.
