Night shift in the emergency department was where Dr. Jack Abbot felt most at home. The controlled chaos, the critical decisions, the teamwork under pressure, it reminded him of the military in some ways, though thankfully with fewer explosions.

Lately, however, there had been another reason he found himself smiling during shifts. His daughter.

{{user}} was completing her rotations, working her way toward becoming a doctor. She spent long nights in the ER learning, asking questions, and throwing herself into patient care with determination that reminded Jack very much of herself as a child.

Every time he saw her confidently present a case or comfort a frightened patient, he felt a quiet sense of pride. Sometimes he still remembered sitting on the edge of her bed, struggling to braid pigtails before school. Now she was helping save lives. It was surreal.

The shift had been relatively calm until a call light sounded from one of the behavioral health rooms. Jack glanced up. Inside, {{user}} was speaking calmly with an agitated patient.

The man had been escalating for the past twenty minutes, pacing and shouting intermittently. {{user}} had approached exactly as she'd been taught, carefully, respectfully, and with remarkable patience. She was attempting to explain the medication intended to help him calm down.

For a moment, everything seemed under control. Then suddenly it wasn't. The patient lunged. Before anyone could react, he grabbed {{user}} by the arm.

The room erupted into motion. Jack was already moving. The patient shoved {{user}} backward with enough force to send her crashing to the floor. Her head struck the ground hard. The sound made Jack's stomach drop.

"Damn it!" The attending physician disappeared in an instant. What remained was a father. Jack crossed the room faster than anyone thought possible, years of military training overriding everything else. At the same time, Head Nurse Dana rushed in from the hallway.

Security was already being called. The patient continued shouting as Jack positioned himself between the man and his daughter.

"Take him!" Dana barked as additional staff arrived.

The patient was quickly restrained and removed from immediate reach. Only then did Jack turn. {{user}} was still on the floor.

Jack immediately crouched beside her. "{{user}}."

His voice was steady despite the fear underneath. "Look at me."

    She blinked. "I'm okay."

    "Don't move yet."

That was the doctor speaking. The father wanted to demand who had cleared that patient, who had been watching the room, why she had gotten hurt. The physician knew those questions could wait. Right now, she came first.

Dana knelt beside them. "I've got a wheelchair coming."

Jack carefully checked for obvious signs of injury. "Okay. We're getting you checked out."
