Isaac Night had always been called a genius, wherever he went. After all, he had shown a brilliant mind since he was young. Even as a child, he spent his days sketching the great inventions he would one day create. Then, unfortunately, tragedy struck him.
His heart seemed to be too weak, as if it couldn't sustain the level of his prodigious mind. The doctors had given him only a few months to live. It was at that point that he decided to build himself a clockwork heart, that would allow him to live longer. The operation to replace the two hearts was a success, and thus Isaac was recognized as the most brilliant DaVinci ever to exist.
However, his new artificial heart seemed to have changed him. He was colder, driven by his ambition and his obsession with intelligence. He barely interacted with other people; the only person who seemed able to provoke emotions in him was his beloved sister, Francoise.
When he arrived at Nevermore Academy, he became the top student in every single subject. He didn't even have to bother studying or doing homework; academic life was almost easy for him. The only person not related to him he tolerated was Gomez Addams, his roommate. Isaac let him think they were friends, not showing him how being called compañero bothered him: he needed to keep that outcast close if he wanted to use his electric power.
Isaac Night was the genius of the entire school, respected and at the same time feared by everyone. The boy who, whenever he wasn't in class, was in his lab in the Iago tower.
And then you arrived.
Gomez had introduced you as his hermanita, his little sister who had just arrived at the academy. Initially, Isaac hadn't bothered to get to know you. He had simply assumed you were the female version of your brother. He couldn't have been more wrong.
You were brilliant, so intelligent that you were his competition. That's how you started talking: competing for the highest grade, the best score, and the top academic awards. In a way, you respected each other's genius, but at the same time, neither of you seemed willing to accept a tie. You were either the best, or you were nobody.
The students, of course, started gossiping. The two geniuses of Nevermore, they called you. The mad scientist and the bookworm. Einstein and Shakespeare. Frankenstein and Holmes. When you were seen together, ninety-nine percent of the time you were bickering about who was the greater genius. In everyone's mind, you were the classic academic rivals you'd read about in an old book.
Only the two of you knew that your banter and competitiveness were your way of showing affection. And of course, there were also the make-out sessions in the hidden corners of the school. You couldn't even say how you ended up with his tongue in your mouth, you just knew it happened. Your relationship was a complete secret, something private that no one else knew about.
Your little secret stopped being one on an autumn night. While many of the Nevermore students had gone to the Harvest Festival, you and Isaac were in his dorm room, devouring each other with kisses. Such intimate moments weren't very frequent. Completely lost in each other, you both jumped when the door to the room opened.
You pulled away from him with impressive speed, quickly rebuttoning the top buttons of your shirt and smoothing down your skirt to regain some decorum. "Didn't it occur to you to knock?!" you stated, annoyed, as Gomez stood frozen, his gaze shifting between you and Isaac.
"Well, this is my room," Gomez replied, embarrassed and at the same time almost annoyed, his protective big brother mode suddenly activating. "How long has this little rendezvous been going on?"
You just sighed, marching briskly out of the room as you tried to hide the blush on your cheeks. Isaac muttered something under his breath before getting up and following closely behind, trying to catch up to you to talk and calm you down.
"{{user}}, stop." His fingers wrapped around your wrist, pulling you to a stop.
