The sun was already dipping behind the low hills as the carriage bearing the faded Valentine crest rumbled to a halt before the manor. The air smelled of tilled earth and distant woodsmoke. Kuro stood in the courtyard, boots dusted, coat plain but neat, hands clasped behind his back as Gray, his steward, stepped forward to open the carriage door.

A moment of silence, then a slender gloved hand appeared, followed by a woman whose presence seemed to command the very light around her. Violet Valentine stepped down, her violet hair-remarkably unruffled by the journey-catching the sun’s last rays. Her posture was impeccable, her gaze cool and assessing as she surveyed the unfamiliar landscape and the simple manor before her.

Violet: Her voice was measured, every syllable crisp with noble training. "Baron Heartfield, I presume. I am Violet Valentine. You have my gratitude for arranging my arrival, despite the... abruptness of circumstance."

Kuro: He offered a polite bow-respectful, but not servile. He noted the way she held herself, every movement deliberate, as if she were still in a palace ballroom rather than a frontier courtyard. "Welcome to Shiki, Lady Violet. I hope the journey was not too taxing. I must apologize for the lack of ceremony-out here, we tend to value practicality over pageantry."

Violet: She inclined her head, the gesture precise, her gloved hands folded neatly at her waist. "Ceremony is a matter of habit, not necessity. I assure you, Baron, I am prepared to fulfill my obligations regardless of the setting."

Kuro: He gestured toward the manor, a faint smile tugging at his lips as he caught the villagers peering curiously from behind fence posts. "Your quarters are prepared in the east wing. They’re modest, but the morning sun warms them early. I hope that will suffice."

Violet: Her eyes flickered, just for a heartbeat, toward the villagers and the rough-hewn timbers of the manor. She betrayed no outward discomfort, but her voice softened a fraction. "Sunlight is most welcome. Thank you for your consideration, Baron Heartfield."

Kuro: He led the way, matching his stride to her measured pace. As they walked, he glanced at her, noting how she navigated the uneven ground with practiced grace, never faltering even when her hem brushed against a patch of mud. "We have mint tea from the garden. Not quite what you’d find in the capital, but it’s fresh. Would you care for some after you’ve settled in?"

Violet: She hesitated, the faintest crease appearing between her brows, then nodded with the dignity of someone accepting a royal invitation. "That would be... acceptable. I appreciate your hospitality."

As they approached the manor’s entrance, the last light of day caught in the glass panes, casting golden patterns on the floorboards. Violet paused, her gaze lingering on the simple architecture, the worn stones beneath her feet.

Kuro: His voice was quieter now, almost confiding. "Shiki isn’t what you’re used to, Lady Violet. But if you’re willing, it can become a place worth calling home. People here are honest, and the land rewards hard work."

Violet: She turned to face him fully, her expression unreadable, but her eyes-so often described as cold-held a flicker of something softer, perhaps curiosity, perhaps resolve. "A home is shaped by its inhabitants, Baron. I shall endeavor not to disappoint-nor to be disappointed."

Gray moved to take her small trunk, but Violet stopped him with a gentle, authoritative gesture, lifting it herself. The villagers’ whispers grew as she entered, but she held her head high, every inch the noblewoman, even in exile.

As the manor door closed behind them, Kuro watched her for a moment longer, thinking, She wears her pride like armor. But perhaps, in time, she’ll find she no longer needs it here.

Their first meeting was a careful dance of manners and subtle challenge, each weighing the other-not as enemies, but as strangers bound by fate, both uncertain what the future in Shiki might hold.
