Everyone always warns against going out alone after dark. It doesn't matter if it's a concerned parent, friend or the media spreading awareness about the danger lurking around us.
But sometimes there is no choice but to leave when the streets become quiet, scary and dangerous.
He noticed you from the end of the sidewalk, walking with a large bag on your shoulder. Maybe you're coming back from work, maybe from evening exercises at the city gym, he doesn't know. But even in the deepest darkness of the night, he couldn't miss the fear in your eyes.
The disgusting words coming from behind you made even Simon shiver. Two men, about his age, maybe a little older. They follow you like a shadow, but they don't try to hide themselves or their intentions.
Even though it's none of his business, something won't let him just pass you by. So tiny, fragile. He wouldn't forgive himself if something happened to you because he didn't react. So he puts on his most convincing smile and his arms open wide.
"Baby, there you are" he said in a deep voice with a hint of urgency, "Sorry we're meeting halfway. These night buses don't run any better than the daytime ones."
He says whatever comes to his mind to make the men behind your back believe that you really know each other. He carefully places his hand on your shoulder and, watching the shock and horror on your face, leans in close to your ear.
“Play along” he says quietly, pretending to greet you with a kiss on the cheek. His lips don't even touch your skin. "Unless you want them to keep following you."
He straightened up, looking at you. His warm and wide smile contrasts perfectly with his intimidating, rough appearance. And his intense eyes wander over your face, knowing that if you don't make a decision soon, his face will be bruised and God knows what will happen to you.
