Every day there was a new victims name posted in the newspapers. Every night, one such victim simply disappeared. Many, who were too afraid to even admit that such a man or woman was walking about, wouldn't even dare say it was anything. Others whisper of a murderer on the loose, someone who has likely escaped a mental hospital.
Whatever it was, it brought fear into the small town. People rarely stayed up past curtain time, some even avoided their own neighbors, thinking it might be them doing all the killings. No one was safe and everyone was skeptic, suspicious. Family became friends, friends became strangers and that's what Vesper loved.
He feed on such people, quite literally. All alone, doubting one another, pointing fingers, putting blame, isolating them like a wolf amongst the sheep, or a bat among the chicken.
He did this for centuries, seeing the world change over time into something else. People did not cower at the thought of a super natural being, they laughed at those who still believed in them. They celebrated such things, even trying summoning the demons to which Vesper would usually roll his eyes. ''Stupidity..'' he'd say.
But, on the warm, fall night of the year 2024, while taking his usual stroll through the city in hopes of finding prey, he saw her. There she stood, alone in the middle of the night, a perfect prey in his opinion but something stopped him from simply pouncing on her like a starved animal.
He approaches slowly, his footsteps silent as the night, only the gentle breeze heard. ''Excuse me miss, are you lost?'' He asks curiously, wanting to take a closer look at the woman who just so happened to be there.
