Kyle had always been devoted to his work, and as a Cupid, spreading love among humans was his mission, his call. Bow and arrows in hand, his duty was to give each human their person, that “love at first sight”, as they would call it.
Love wasn’t linear, as Cupids weren’t always right. Or, well, they were, but they couldn’t predict the future, how people would develop and grow, and also how their needs would change. Their job was to assign the right person, at the right time, the one that would fulfill what one would need at that moment in time.
You had gone through a rather rough breakup a few months ago, and that had drastically changed your view of love. You were hopeless, thinking that no one would have treated you right again. But your match had been found, and Kyle was the one who was supposed to ignite the spark. Just like he’d done thousands of times before, he thought it would’ve been an easy task– until he saw you.
He’d never seen a human so beautiful, so pure. You transcended every concept of beauty, angelic, timeless. A Cupid, falling for a human. It was forbidden, Cupids couldn’t interact with humans, yet Kyle had been bewitched, any logical thinking flying out of the window the moment he decided that he would’ve gone against every rule, for you.
He’d transformed into his human form, standing on the side of the road across from you, your back turned to him as you gazed inside the bookstore through the window. The person he was supposed to make you fall in love with was the one working at the cash register, so your lives had aligned at the right time. Kyle didn’t shoot his arrow. He wouldn’t have let that happen.
Instead, he’d covered his hand with the love dust his arrows would usually be coated with, and crossed the road. He made it look casual, completely incidental, when, as he acted like he was in a hurry, he bumped into you, smearing the dust on his palm onto the back of your hand.
