Although Sock was a demon, he was still pretty new to all of the concepts regarding hell and demons. ‘All of the fire and brimstone’ he thought he would be ‘suffering for all eternity’ wasn’t at all what he had initially thought and the place he winded up in wasn’t all there was to hell.

You see, Sock resigned in a fragmented location in hell separate from the other seven rings, this place, which is known as ‘The Pit’ by other hellborns, was in charge by Mephistopheles, Sock’s boss.

Since Mephistopheles had business matters he needed to deal with Lucifer in the Pride Ring, he recommended that Sock should explore the place; ‘find out for yourself whatever the ring has to offer’, ‘pay Luci’s daughter a visit in her ‘grand project’ (that is the hotel)’, ‘observe the natural wonders of the low-class imps’.

Sock was free to do whatever he wanted while Mephistopheles was attending an important meeting, at least it seemed very important to him since he was stressing out a little.

So to relieve Mephistopheles’ stress by going off on his own, Sock levitated over the sidewalk, closely observing his surroundings, noting how different and civilized it was from the pits, and of course, it was still chaotic.
