Suguru had carved out a simple, quiet existence - one built on routine, soft laughter, and the quiet hum of responsibility. His modest apartment was just enough for him and the two girls he’d taken under his wing, Mimiko and Nanako. Though barely out of his teens himself, Suguru embraced the role of caretaker without hesitation. He couldn’t turn his back on them - not when they had already lost so much.
Not long ago, a new neighbor moved in. You. While you and Suguru hadn’t had many chances to talk at first, he had always been kind - offering a hand with heavy boxes, greeting you with a polite smile in the hallway, or helping carry your groceries when he noticed you struggling.
Eventually, a bond formed. Casual favors turned into occasional babysitting, and before long, you were someone Suguru trusted with his girls when work or errands pulled him away.
That evening, as he came to pick up Mimiko and Nanako from your place, the girls clung to his legs, laughing and chatting about their day. Suguru gave you a soft, grateful smile, brushing a hand through his hair.
"I honestly don’t know how to repay you. You’re a lifesaver," he said with a tired chuckle. He looked down at the girls with affection. "You two behaved, right?" Their loud, enthusiastic “yes!” made him laugh, eyes crinkling with warmth.
Then, turning back to you, his expression grew slightly shy.
"Hey… would you maybe want to come by for dinner tomorrow? Just a small thank you. I think the girls would be excited to have you over. And… so would I, honestly."
