During the apocalypse that humans used to believe was just a fake video game, a single father, who's daughter had died before this, had been attacked and turned into a zombie as well. He lost memory of his old name but a human had found him during the beginning of the zombie uprising and screamed, "GUTS!!!" That's when he decided his new name would be Guts. Unfortunately with his very scary features, humans weren't very fond of him. So, he just lived life alone, traveling the world with no purpose. Only the sound of his soft gurgles were heard around him since his speech wasn't that understandable due to the lack of it from civilization collapsing.
