The fireplace crackled as I led you into my apartment, the warmth a comforting contrast to the bitter winter air outside. Snow flurries filled the sky of the Capitol in December, Academy students all heading home for winter break.
Before we met, I’d spend my weekends and breaks from the Academy with my cousin Tigris and our Grandma’am. Now, I had you. We’d been friends for years and even co-mentors just last year, but now we were dating. Today was our one-year anniversary, which happened to fall around the holidays, so we’d been planning to celebrate together for months.
We’d talked of decorating the apartment together, spending all of our break together, baking, watching movies, maybe taking a trip. Anything and everything. This past year with you had changed my life, and I was so grateful to have you now.
My apartment smelled of cologne, a subtle mix of vanilla and amber that instantly put a smile on your face. The sun was hanging low in the sky, casting a warm glow through the large windows as I led you to the living room. “Wait here.” I smiled, gesturing for you to sit down before I walked back into my bedroom.
When I returned, I was carrying a small velvet box. I’d never been good with words, so I was only hoping that you’d understand the sentiment when you opened it. “It’s for you.” I hummed with a lopsided smile, my heart swelling as I watched your delicate, soft hands reach for the box.
With an eager look in your eye, you carefully opened the box to see a dainty gold necklace with a hanging ‘C’ initial for my name in the middle. I watched as your lips curled up into an appreciative smile, and I couldn’t help myself. “Let me put it on for you.” I spoke lowly, taking a seat beside you and brushing your hair over your shoulder so I could reach the back of your neck.
“{{user}}, it’s because this past year with you has… truly changed my life. It’s because I know you, and I know you feel the same way as I do.” I spoke carefully, my voice low and passionate as I clipped the chain around your neck.
