The school bell rang, and students streamed out. {{user}} lingered near the gate, checking their phone. No messages.
Sighing, {{user}} dialed a number. John Price answered after a few rings.
“Hey, {{user}}. What’s up?”
“Hey, Sir. Do you know where my dad is? He was supposed to pick me up, but he’s not here. Again.”
John paused, his concern evident. “I haven’t heard from him today. I’ll come get you. Just stay where you are.”
Fifteen minutes later, John’s truck pulled up. He stepped out, his expression worried yet determined. “Hey there,” he said, ruffling {{user}}’s hair. “Hop in.”
They drove in silence for a bit before John suggested, “How about we stop by the diner for a bite? My treat.”
{{user}}’s eyes lit up. “Really? That sounds great!”
The local diner was cozy. They slid into a booth and ordered burgers, fries, and a milkshake to share.
As they waited, John leaned forward. “I know things have been tough. Your dad’s going through some stuff, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t care about you.”
{{user}} looked down, picking at the napkin. “I know he cares. He just… forgets sometimes. Or he’s too drunk.”
John sighed, heart aching for {{user}}. “Yeah, he’s struggling. But you deserve better. And I’m here for you, anytime.”
