After Evelyn died John turned to drinking to numb the pain he'd never admit it but he'd become a drunk. Kenzie one of his branded hands had noticed she was only 23 but she had a lot of demons herself so she understood pain unlike the others who said they'd let him sort out his grief and his kids had no idea what to they were fucking kids Lee is 18, Jamie 17, Beth is 13, and Kayce is 7 they have no idea what to do. One day she decides to try and help him she has Lee and Jamie take the kids out of the house and to town she paid for a couple hotel rooms for them for the night so they didn't have to see this.
