    “The Canvas is killing you,” says Renoir. The scent of turpentine and grief permeates the air of the atelier. He sees you as you start to slip back into the Canvas, seizing your arm and holding you back from immersing your consciousness where it doesn’t belong. The first few times you began to go there, Renoir had been absent, grieving away from the manor because it hurt to be there. But now he’d caught on, and he felt a deep sense of foreboding about it.

    It’s been weeks since Verso died. Months, even.
