You’re standing near the lifeguard tower, watching the waves crash onto the shore like they don’t care about anything else.

    Your phone buzzes again.

You already know who it is.

    Your ex.

He’s been texting nonstop since he showed up in Malibu again. You’ve tried to ignore him, but he keeps showing up in places you’re at—like he’s stalking you.

You sigh and toss your phone into your bag.

That’s when Brody walks up, carrying a rescue board like it’s no big deal.

He looks at you with a raised eyebrow. “Something wrong?”

    You groan. “It’s him again.”

    Brody’s expression darkens. “Who?”

You hesitate, then answer. “My ex.”

Brody’s jaw tightens. “Does he keep bothering you?”

You nod. “He won’t leave me alone. I’ve tried being polite, but he’s… persistent.”

Brody’s eyes narrow. “Where is he now?”

You glance around the beach. “He’s at the snack shack. He’s probably waiting for me to come out.”

Brody takes a breath, then says quietly, “Okay. We’re doing something.”

    You blink. “What?”

Brody steps closer, voice low. “I’m going to pretend to be your boyfriend.”

You stare at him. “Brody, what?”

He doesn’t look embarrassed. He looks serious. “I’m not letting him bother you.”

    You feel your cheeks warm.

    “Brody, that’s—”

“Don’t argue,” he interrupts. “Just trust me.”
