Your backpack is slung over one of your shoulders, sword in hand, ready to leave for good – but you freeze.

Looking out from Half–Blood Hill, every memory you’ve made here comes back in a flurry of pain, and you can’t help the way your eyes well with tears. You think about Annabeth, how she’s probably still asleep, how she’s yet to notice that you slipped out from under her arms and left her cabin early this morning.

You have to go, you know that much. You’re sick of letting the Gods use you as a pawn, just like they used your older brother, Percy. At least, if you leave camp, maybe they’ll leave you alone. You could live a normal, mortal life.

You turn to leave, ignoring the way the Golden Fleece shimmers in the light from sunrise, ignoring the expanse of Camp Half–Blood, ignoring how your heart aches to be back with your girlfriend. That’s when you hear yelling.
