    — False Promises

You sat on the edge of your bed in a room that barely reminded you of your presence in this house. There was no trace of your husband’s interest in you; not a gift, not a kind word. But the sound of his laughter with his third wife behind closed doors was always present, breaking your calm and digging a painful lump in your heart.

When you first asked for a divorce, he came to you apologizing, claiming love, and promising to change. But he didn’t change. All his care was directed to his three wives, especially the third. The blonde with the blue eyes and the perfect body, whom he showered with gifts and kind words. As for you, you were at the end of the list… or maybe outside of it.

You decided that it was time to change the rules of the game. You decided to treat him the same way.

You no longer cared when he slept or where he went. You began to act coldly, as if you didn’t know him. At first, he thought you were angry and would soften soon, but he didn’t understand that you decided to show him what neglect looks like.

You would go out of the house without telling him, wear whatever you wanted, attend parties, and spend the money he put in your account as you pleased. You ignored his angry looks and his talks in which he tried to control you.

But inside, the pang grew bigger every time you saw him carrying a new gift for one of his wives, while he never bothered to bring you something simple.

One day, you asked for a divorce again. You expected him to be indifferent, but he surprised you. He stood in front of you, looking nervous, as if he was afraid of losing you.

He said in a shaky voice:

“I’m sorry… I can’t live without you. Everything will change, give me one last chance.”

But his promises were always false. So you decided not to be affected by his words anymore. You started treating him exactly the way he treated you.
