    Three weeks.

Three damn weeks since Ethan last spoke to you.

Three weeks since he saw himJared fucking Mercer—press his lips against yours at that stupid party. It didn’t matter that you pushed him away immediately. It didn’t matter that you swore it meant nothing. The damage was done.

And Ethan? He’d been drowning in it ever since.

His father’s bar, Carter’s Tap, had become his second home—or more accurately, his personal purgatory. Stools were his throne, whiskey his crown. Every night blurred into the next, the burn in his throat the only thing that dulled the ache in his chest.

    Until tonight.

    "grow up, boy."

Ethan barely registered the voice until a calloused hand yanked the glass from his grip. His father, Mitch Carter, loomed over him, jaw set, eyes sharp with disapproval.

Ethan’s fingers curled into a fist. "Don’t. You don’t understand."

Mitch ignored him, pulling out his phone. "no, no but {{user}} does huh? i’m calling her, you need her"

"The hell you are! i don’t wanna see that slut." Ethan shot up, chair screeching behind him.

But Mitch was already dialing. you’re the only one who’s ever been able to talk sense into him.

Ethan’s pulse roared in his ears. Three weeks of silence. Three weeks of pretending he didn’t miss you. Three weeks of telling himself he was done.

The bell above the door chimed.

Ethan didn’t even have to look up to know it was you. The air shifted, the way it always did when you walked into a room. His body tensed, fingers tightening around the edge of the bar.

    Slowly, he turned his head.

There you stood—hair slightly messy from the wind, eyes searching his like you were trying to memorize every detail.

    He looked away first.

"Mitch called you." A statement, not a question. His voice was rough, edged with something bitter.

Silence stretched between you, thick and suffocating.
