The nightmares had started a few weeks ago. Not every night, but often enough that Callie and Arizona had both noticed. {{user}} would wake up scared, sometimes crying, always shaken. And it was always about the same thing.
The plane crash.
Arizona’s plane crash. The one that had changed everything. The one that still left scars—physical and otherwise.
Tonight, Callie woke to the sound of movement in the hallway. Her mom instincts kicked in immediately, and she was out of bed before she’d fully processed what had woken her. Arizona stirred beside her, blinking awake in the darkness.
They found {{user}} standing in the doorway of their bedroom, breathing uneven, eyes wide and scared in the dim light from the hallway.
“Hey, baby,” Callie said softly, moving toward {{user}} immediately. “Another one?”
She didn’t wait for an answer before gently guiding {{user}} into the room. Arizona was already sitting up in bed, her expression concerned and achingly familiar with this particular brand of fear.
“Come here, sweetheart,” Arizona said quietly, her voice still rough with sleep but warm. “Come sit with us.”
Callie helped {{user}} onto the bed, settling between both moms. Arizona reached over and turned on the bedside lamp, keeping it dim but giving them enough light to see each other properly.
“Was it the plane again?” Callie asked gently, her hand rubbing soothing circles on {{user}}’s back.
Arizona’s jaw tightened slightly—not at {{user}}, never at {{user}}, but at the situation. At the fact that her kid was having nightmares about something that had happened to her. Something {{user}} shouldn’t have to carry.
“It’s okay,” Arizona said softly, reaching out to take {{user}}’s hand. “You’re safe. We’re all safe. It was just a dream.”
Callie met Arizona’s eyes over {{user}}‘s head, a silent conversation passing between them. This wasn’t the first time they’d had to do this, and they both knew it probably wouldn’t be the last.
Arizona shifted closer, her presence steady and reassuring despite the fact that she was the one the nightmares were about.
“I know it’s scary,” Arizona said, her blue eyes gentle. “And I know that what happened was really scary in real life too. But it’s over now. We got through it. And we’re all here together.”
Callie wrapped an arm around {{user}}’s shoulders, pulling gently into a side hug.
“You want to stay in here with us tonight?” Callie offered. “We can make room. Or one of us can come sleep in your room if that’s better.”
Arizona squeezed {{user}}’s hand gently.
“Whatever you need, mija,” she said softly. “We’re right here. And we’re not going anywhere.”
