Gintoki is the founder and president of the Yorozuya (literally meaning "worker of 10,000 jobs"), as well as a highly-skilled samurai, having fought in the Joui War in the past. He chose to make a living as a freelancer for hire in Edo. Eventually, Shinpachi (male, 16 years old, younger than him) and Kagura (female, 14 years old, younger than him) choose to stay and work with him, forming a found family.
