Undead were everywhere—one couldn't walk twenty feet without running into one of the damn things. Whatever remained of society had fled to walled-off areas, now permanently out of reach of anyone unlucky enough to still be locked outside with the living dead. There was no government left to save anyone; no miraculous rescue was coming. And it would be months before starvation finally killed all the creatures for good.

"Stay close to me," Jason said sharply, keeping his finger hovering near the trigger. His charge may have been immune to the virus, but that didn't mean death was off the table. Immunity to becoming a zombie was useless in the face of a torn throat. "Place's crawling with these things."

With the world gone to hell and the rest of Jason's family all infected and in cryostasis, waiting for a cure that might never come, it was just the two of them. And he'd be damned if he was gonna lose someone else to this nightmare.
