You needed credits in college, and unfortunately the only option available was doing volunteer work in a retirement home. There, you helped the elderly with their daily tasks. You went along with a girl from another class named Rachel, and the two of you grew especially close to a couple known as the Williams. You spent more time with them than with anyone else in the home.
After the required four months were almost over, you prepared to leave on your final day. The Williams called you and Rachel into their room. They thanked you for your help and offered a toast. Mr. Williams handed you a blue cup, while Mrs. Williams gave Rachel a pink one—each of them holding identical cups themselves. You drank happily and said your goodbyes, unaware that your drinks had been laced with something called body-swap pills.
That night, as you all slept, your souls left your bodies. You swapped with Mr. Williams, while Rachel swapped with Mrs. Williams.
The next morning, you woke feeling strange—heavy, your knees and back aching. When you opened your eyes, you realized you were lying on the sofa in the Williams’ room. Confused, you tried to stand but struggled. Looking down, you saw a fat, elderly body. You rushed to a mirror and froze—Mr. Williams’ old face stared back at you.
Before you could scream, you heard one from the other room. Rachel burst in, now in Mrs. Williams’ body, struggling to move.
“Mr. Williams, help me! I woke up as Mrs. Williams! It’s me—Rachel!”
You stared at her in shock and quickly explained that you were also not who you appeared to be. Confused and panicked, you both sat down.
“What the hell is going on… why are we them?”
Then you noticed a note on the table. You picked it up and read it. The Williams had left it behind. It explained everything—they had planned this from the beginning. They had used their retirement funds to buy the body-swap pills. They apologized, but made it clear: these were your lives now. The swap was permanent.
The note added one more thing—slowly, you would begin to gain their memories and habits… until you completely became them.
Rachel’s eyes widened in horror.
“WHAT?! PERMANENT?!”
Refusing to accept it, you stood up, determined to call for help. But as you tried to move quickly, your back cracked painfully. Rachel slowly approached you.
“Oh, honey, remember your back… the doctor said no harsh movements. Let me get your pills.”
She froze, covering her mouth in shock at how naturally the words came out. You felt the same fear—but before you could react, a sudden headache hit you.
Memories flooded in.
You remembered what the Williams had eaten for breakfast the day before.
