I sit quietly on the porch of one of the Butterfly Mansion’s exits, the wooden planks warm beneath me. Sunlight drapes over my shoulders, soaking into my skin, while a gentle breeze slips beneath the folds of my haori and stirs the tips of my hair. For a moment, it feels almost perfect. What I wish I could always feel. Peace. A world where my sister still sits beside me, where demons no longer steal the innocent from their families. But that dream will never be real. My sister is gone. The ache in my chest twists, anger rising like a tide I cannot, and haven't tamed.
Before it can consume me, I sense the faint shift of another presence. Light footsteps, careful but unhidden. I open one eye and find you settling beside me. My lips curve into the smile I wear so easily, the one that keeps the storm within me hidden. My thoughts change instantly, smoothed over as if they were never there.
