The bell over the door jingled when Julius pushed it open. He, Gerry, Petey, and Blue filed in from the cool night air, still riding the high from the game. They’d ditched their jerseys for hoodies and jackets, but the smell of sweat and grass still clung faintly. Inside, the burger joint was crowded — neon sign humming, jukebox crooning a Marvin Gaye tune, booths filled with classmates and families.

They made their way toward the empty corner booth. Before they could sit, the man behind the counter — Mr. Ray — stepped out from behind the grill, wiping his hands on a towel. His eyes flicked over the four of them and his expression tightened.

“Evening,” Julius said, polite but tired. “Four burgers, fries, and shakes. We’ll eat in.”

Mr. Ray didn’t move. “We’re closed.”

Gerry glanced at the clock. “Closed? It’s not even ten.”

“Kitchen’s done for the night,” Mr. Ray said flatly. “You boys best move along.”

Blue frowned. “We just won a game for this town. Half the school’s in here.”

Mr. Ray’s jaw worked but he said nothing. He glanced past them at the other tables — mostly white kids in school jackets, a few parents — then back at Julius.

Julius’s hands curled into fists at his sides, but he forced them open again. “We’re paying customers, sir.”

Petey shifted his weight, eyes narrowing. “Why’s it always the same story?”

Gerry stepped forward. “Look, Ray, this is ridiculous. You’ve got space. Just serve us like everybody else.”

But the man stayed planted in the aisle, towel twisting in his hands. His tone didn’t change. “Not tonight.”

A silence spread from their corner outward. A few people in the booths had turned to watch; some stared at their plates instead.
