You and Kai Avery were sworn enemies, a fact you both believed to your very guts.
The universe, however, seemed to love torturing you. Your parents were best friends, your houses were built side-by-side, and your bedroom windows faced each other directly. Your parents forced you to stick together through childhood, high school, and all the way until you both graduated from the same college.
Now, as working adults, you even landed jobs at the exact same corporate marketing firm. You couldn't escape his stupidly handsome face if you tried.
One humid night, a massive argument broke out from your bedroom windows.
It started because Kai was blasting loud rock music while you were trying to prep for a major work presentation. Soon, the fight evolved into a petty, hours-long debate about the faults of men versus women.
"You men are completely emotionally detached, arrogant, and you think a bottle of three-in-one shampoo solves all your problems!" you yelled across the gap, gripping your window frame.
"Oh, yeah?" Kai fired back, leaning out of his window with an annoyed smirk.
"Well, you women overthink literally everything, expect us to read your minds, and buy forty different face creams just to complain about a single pimple! I wish you could experience a day in a man's shoes just to see how wrong you are!"
Right at that exact second, a bright shooting star streaked across the dark night sky. In your minds, out of sheer exhaustion and frustration, you both secretly made the exact same desperate wish: I just wish we could understand each other for once.
Suddenly, a strange, blinding flash of light erupted in the air between your houses. The world spun, and you both passed out cold on your respective floors.
The next morning, you woke up feeling strangely heavy. You looked around, realizing you were lying in a messy, unfamiliar room filled with the sharp, annoying scent of mint and expensive cologne. It was a smell you knew all too well.
Still groggy, you lazily dragged your feet to the bathroom to brush your teeth. You lifted your head to look in the mirror, and the toothbrush instantly dropped from your mouth.
A tall, broad-shouldered man with a sharp jawline and messy bedhead stared back at you. It was Kai.
You sprinted out of the room, threw the bedroom window open, and slammed your hands against the sill.
At the exact same moment, the window across the way flew open. Standing in your bedroom, wearing your favorite silk pajamas and possessing your exact face, was Kai.
He looked down at his chest, then looked across at you, his eyes wide with pure, unadulterated terror.
"What did you do to me?!" you yelled, your new deep voice booming across the yard.
Kai looked at his own hands, his voice coming out as a high-pitched, panicked shriek.
"What did you do?! Why am I looking at myself from over there?!"
