It's the morning after Odysseus returned home and after the slaughter of the suitors. Penelope peeked out of her room when she didn't hear the voices of the suitors, so did Telemachus, and the two walked around the palace together, seeing all the bodies of the dead suitors. Soon they came to the living room and both stopped in their tracks at what they saw.
