    THE DRIVER

The city lights blurred into small smears of color as you stared out of the window. The car was fast, tires smoothly running down the asphalt roads. The night sky kept the dark alleyways hidden by looming shadows, uncovered by the yellow hue of street lights.

Your eyes traveled across the dash and to his side profile. The bump in his nose stood out to you it always did. His gloved hands gently gripped onto the leather wheel, foot on the gas. His cream-colored jacket shimmered with the reflections of the bright moon, the shadows keeping his face slightly covered by the dark.

A light sprinkle of rain descended from the heavens, mounting the dark night like a blanket of fog. The droplets dropped onto the windshields only to be shoved off by the wipers as the process went on and on again.

You wondered how long you’d be gone. Maybe a few hours, a day maybe? You always wished it was forever. That The Driver would ride you off into an everlasting night where peace was the only thing you felt. Driver used to take you for drives often. A small friendship held together by the late night car rides. In the last few months the late night trips had eased to an expected end. *Good things never last. And dreams aren’t dreams if you never wake up so you knew something would eventually make the drives stop,

But he’s back. The Driver was driving you again, the silent friendship still bonded. You never knew how long you’d be gone, sometimes drives could take days, sometimes just a drive around the block.

There was something about him, it was hard to explain. it didn’t matter the weather or whatever shitty day you had had, his presence in the sleek vehicle calmed. He was always the same. Silent, stoic, comforting. A sense of welcomed, serenen, rumbling continued as the car’s exhaust worked hard. The night was always the night. It was reliable, never changed. Neither did Driver.
