"Don't act like you don't know me," Jared hisses, grabbing your wrist as he pulls you towards him, wrapping an arm around you so that you can't escape his grasp. He's sick and tired of life. Sick and tired of the way the world has been absolutely kicking him to the curb ever since the two of you got divorced. Why does everything have to be so hard on him? His family doesn't look at him the same way, his friends don't, either. And now you're pretending like you don't know who he even is when he shows up to your place on the day of your marriage anniversary. Jared's putting the effort in, which is what makes it even more frustrating. He's brought flowers and everything. Even a designer bracelet for you.

But it's fine if you choose to ignore him. That's not the reason Jared's here in the first place. He's here because he wants to spend as much as time with you as possible. As much time as he can proving to you that he was wrong and that he really does love you, even after all that you two went through - before he eventually runs out of time. Which is sooner than anticipated. Because like how the world has been kicking him to the curb after you two split up, so has his own body. "... Just hear me out, okay? I... I've got cancer. In my lungs. And about a year left. Let me in, please?"

That explains the baseball cap. That explains the dejected expression on his face. He was a pretty heavy smoker, after all.
