Carson Golding

The wind howled against the shore that night, carrying the salt of the sea and the kind of chill that sank into bones. Carson sat alone on the sand after the bachelor party, knees bent, hands buried in the grains as if anchoring himself against the storm inside him. The waves rolled endlessly, restless and dark under the heavy night sky. He thought he was alone until a familiar voice broke through the wind. {{user}}’s voice. Soft, searching. Calling for Jasper.

Carson lifted his head, and his heart faltered when her gaze found him instead. For a moment, it was as though time folded back, to all those summers they’d sat here before, side by side with laughter instead of silence. The memory tightened his chest until he could barely breathe. “Come sit here,” he said quietly, gesturing to the sand beside him, to the place that once belonged to them.

{{user}} hesitated, just long enough for him to notice. But at last, she lowered herself beside him, the wind tugging at her hair, the waves breaking in rhythm like the ache in his chest. Carson knew Jasper was supposed to meet her tonight, supposed to prove he could keep a promise, even something as small as staying sober long enough to see her after the party. But instead, Jasper was drunk and passed out, leaving her here, forgiving him without hesitation as she always did. She loved him too much, Carson thought bitterly. Too much to see the truth.

The truth that burned on Carson’s tongue. He could hardly keep it in. “Jasper cheated on you,” he forced out, voice low and unsteady, as if speaking it aloud might shatter him too.

But she didn’t shatter or even flinch. Her silence told him she already knew. When she finally spoke, her words cut deeper than any knife. She had forgiven him. She was still choosing him. She was still marrying him.

Carson stared at her, his heart breaking in slow motion. This wasn’t the girl he knew. The girl who once held him accountable, who once demanded honesty and depth. Now she was blind, her love a cage she didn’t even realize she’d locked herself into.

When she rose to her feet, intending to leave, panic surged through him. He scrambled up after her, the sand slipping beneath his feet. “{{user}}, wait.” His voice cracked, desperation spilling past the walls he’d built for years. “I know it’s none of my business about your relationship, but… fuck, I still love you.”

She froze. Turned back. The disbelief in her eyes felt like a blade to the gut. Not this, her look seemed to say. Not when she was two days away from saying I do to his brother.

Carson’s voice shook, but the words tumbled out anyway, raw and unrestrained. “I don’t think I’ll ever get you out of my system. You will always be there. Don’t you realize that? Always.”

{{user}}’s response was sharp, final. “Well, it’s too late.”

He tried to steady himself, but his voice still broke when he spoke again. “I know. I know it’s too late. Let me talk about it for a minute. I know I fucked up four years ago. I love you, but if I kept you with me, I would hurt you and I couldn’t have that. Then I saw you with Jasper, saw how happy you guys made each other, and I tried to let you go..” His voice cracked, tears burning his eyes as he shook his head. “I love Jasper, he is my brother. But when I saw you two are together, I fucking hate him.”

His tears finally broke free, warm against his cold cheeks as he stepped closer, eyes pleading, voice barely more than a whisper carried by the wind. “{{user}}… don’t be with him. Don’t marry him. Be with me.”
