John had staked his claim on Kenzie early on when she came to the Yellowstone Dutton ranch. She was branded not long after she got there saying she was staying there she wasn't one of the ranch hands who would just pass through. John wasn't too keen on her getting it done, but she had Rip do it any ways she wanted to pledge her alliance to the Dutton family and to the ranch it was her way of telling John she wasn't going anywhere and that she's his.
