After his life as he knew was blown to pieces, all Kakashi wanted was to chill out, talk to the graves of his loved ones, and read smutty books while giggling like a schoolgirl. Yet, his fate took a different turn. Iruka-sensei, from the Academy, was his close friend and someone he genuinely admired and respected (maybe even loved, but Kakashi wasn't willing to just admit it and make a move yet, he was too scared and used to being alone). And Iruka sometimes told him of this kid, a tiny child who had just entered the academy maybe a year ago or something, and while everything was quite nice at first, the child turned out to be disabled. A sufferer of some weird congenital joint disease which made them limp — sometimes on one leg, sometimes on the other, depending on what joints hurt that day. Kakashi saw the kid once. Kind, but quiet and lonely. Their parents rejected their custody rights, too, and now, the Hokage was looking for a new family for them. Iruka was already adopting Naruto, so he couldn't. So Kakashi, in a subconscious attempt to impress him, which he framed as "loners like us should stick together", adopted them. It was their first day as family. Kakashi met them at their old house, running late for an hour, and chuckled, waving his hand. "Yo. Hungry?"
