Vernal Avenue was loud in the way only Lumiose City could be. Shining storefronts stacked shoulder-to-shoulder, streetlights buzzing, tourists weaving in and out of polished tile walkways with shopping bags swaying at their knees. The air smelled faintly of pastries from a nearby café, engine-smog from the monorail overhead, and the metallic bite of stored electricity humming through Prism Tower.
You had only stopped at a shady Stone Emporium store to browse— maybe buy a trinket just kill a little time— but the merchant was so animated that you barely had a chance to ask what was happening before someone brushed past you.
Not brushed— cut past. You nearly toppled over.
A red-haired boy, probably around your age, slipped into the space ahead of you with the precision of a Scyther slicing through tall grass. His gaze locked onto the merchant, and you caught a glimpse of the look in his eyes— cool as steel, unwavering, like he was measuring every twitch and every breath in the room.
“These Mega Stones are fake.” His voice was low, clipped, not angry so much as dangerous in its certainty. He didn’t bother raising it; silence fell around him anyway. “Try selling these again, and you’ll regret it.”
The merchant sputtered, but the boy didn’t give him the courtesy of a glance as explanation. He held the "Mega Stone" between gloved fingers, turning it just once. Even without knowing anything about Mega Evolution, you could tell something was off.
You stepped closer, unable to hold your tongue. “Hey, are you sure it’s—?"
He flicked his eyes toward you, and that single look made your words stick in your throat. Not necessarily because he was rude, but because his presence cut sharper than any shout could.
“Yes. I’m sure. You can tell by the weight, the residual energy, and the refraction pattern. These stones are dormant. Dead.” He dropped it onto the counter with a soft clink that somehow felt like a verdict. “If you used this in a battle, you’d endanger your Pokémon.”
“…Oh," you stammered sheepishly. "Um, you know a lot about Mega Stones?”
A short, almost reluctant nod. “I’m here for Mega Evolution and Professor Sycamore.” He said it like the name should have been obvious. “Tch, but if the stones here are being counterfeited like this, I’m wasting my time.”
There was a shift in the air around him— something tired, something stubborn. He hid it well, but not perfectly. You couldn’t help looking him over, curious. Tall, lean, posture tense but controlled. Eyes the color of a snowstorm about to break. And his hair— red as a wild flame, pulled forward just so, like a curtain he’d learned to hide behind.
He caught you staring. Of course he did.
“…What?” he asked flatly.
“I— nothing,” you stammered. “Just… you seem like you know what you’re doing.”
His brows dipped faintly, as though he wasn’t used to compliments he couldn’t dismiss. “I don’t deal in guesses. My Pokémon depend on accuracy.”
“You’re trying to Mega Evolve them?”
“Yes.” His voice softened by a fraction, barely enough to count. “Gengar. Alakazam. Gyarados.” His gloved thumb brushed the strap of the Poké Ball holster at his side. “If I’m going to do this, I have to be certain. I won’t risk them by trusting the wrong people.”
You opened your mouth to answer, but Silver acted first. He turned back to the merchant again, eyes narrowed. “Sell counterfeits again and I’ll make sure Sycamore knows.” The merchant scrambled to nod, his words coming out in panicked fragments.
After that, Silver disregarded the merchant. Instead, he glanced at you again. Not as sharp this time. Not as guarded. “…You should be more careful,” he said. “People like him target trainers who don’t pay attention.”
"...Well?" Silver might've smiled at you, but it was hard to tell with his prickly disposition. "You coming or not? This part of Vernal Avenue is shady."
