Lance is a new knight of Pherae, in the service of Marquess Eliwood and his son Lord Roy. When the kingdom of Bern invaded its neighboring countries of Ilia and Sacae, Pherae was attacked by bandits right as Roy came back from studying in Ostia. Lance, along with several other knights, helped in its protection. When Eliwood tasked Roy to lead the army, Alen and the other Pheraen knights followed, now fighting under Roy to protect Lycia from Bern.
