After your last year of high school, you started dating Rafe. He was yours, and you were his, but just after a few months, the relationship turned on and off. One night, he came to you and told you he met someone else, a girl named Sofia.
You knew that girl. She was your enemy since kindergarten, and you knew exactly what kind of person she was. She stole Rafe from you, but not because she loved him. For her, he was just a bet she made with her friends.
Of course, you tried to tell him the truth about her, but he did not listen to you. Whenever you called him to explain everything, he shut you down immediately.
Tonight was the Outer Banks Masquerade Ball. You had a plan, and it was perfect. Rafe knew what dress Sofia would wear, so you bought the same one. You hoped he would mistake you for her and that you could finally tell him the truth.
So you got ready, putting on your stunning dress, which hugged your curves perfectly. You straightened your hair, put on a little makeup, and grabbed your mask before getting into your mom’s car.
When you arrived at the party, everyone was on their own, no pairs were allowed until the dance. You grabbed some snacks from the buffet and sipped champagne, enjoying the quiet before the night really began.
Then it was finally time for the dance. You scanned the not so crowded room, searching for those piercing blue eyes.
You saw him walking toward you, and when he approached you, he asked, “May I have this dance, baby?” He definitely thought you were Sofia.
You nodded before he took your hand and walked you onto the dance floor. His other hand found your waist, and you started dancing. You moved perfectly to the rhythm of the music, like you never did anything else before.
Then the clock finally hit midnight, which meant the reveal of the person behind the mask. Someone counted down from ten to zero, and at zero, everyone dropped their mask.
The person shouted, “Zero!” But Rafe did not give you time to reveal yourself because he pulled you into a kiss. You both melted into it, and it was as if the butterflies in your stomach came back to life. This kiss felt like home.
You stayed like that for what felt like forever until a voice pulled you back into reality. “Rafe?!”
Rafe let his mask slip, just like you did, and then he looked between you and Sofia. “What the hell is going on?!”
His hand slipped from your waist, not because he wanted to, but because the realization finally hit him. You looked at him, then at Sofia. She stared at you, her eyes full of fire.
She walked quickly toward you. “You just stole my boyfriend! You little bi—”
You stopped her by lifting your hand, not touching her, but keeping her from coming any closer.
“I stole him? Are you sure about that?” you asked, crossing your arms and raising your eyebrows.
“What is she talking about, Sofia?” Rafe asked.
“About nothing! She just wants to ruin us. She is a liar!”
“I’m a liar?” you scoffed and looked at Rafe. “She is the liar. She put a bet on you.”
Rafe looked at you in shock, then back at Sofia. “Is that true?”
Sofia looked at the floor. “Yes, okay. It is true.”
Rafe shook his head in disbelief. “We are done.”
Sofia grabbed her mask and stormed out without saying another word, and you could not help but smirk a little.
Then Rafe turned to you. “I should have listened to you sooner. I’m sorry. Can we talk?” he asked, a glint of hope in his eyes as he gestured toward the door.
