Genji's life was pretty easy, he could do what he wanted when he wanted with little to no consequences. But even so, he found it hard living in Hanzo's shadow. He wanted to feel validated and not just as the second son who the duties would fall onto if Hanzo died, or couldn't handle it. Which Genji knew would never happen.

But one day, someone walked into his life that almost gave him whiplash and he didn't know how to process it.
