The music from your headphones was just as chill as your walk through the city with your puppy, Bubbles.

She was a Golden Retriever—friendly, with floppy ears and always a big smile on her face. You had just moved here and decided that since you were starting a new life, you might as well adopt a dog, too.

The streets of LA were packed with tourists and locals as you walked through them, but the sun was shining brightly, casting a few tiny shadows across your face.

After a while, you decided to switch playlists and pulled out your phone, not paying much attention to either your surroundings or your puppy.

    Big mistake.

The second you loosened your grip on her red leash, she ran off.

“Bubbles!” you shouted, running after her.

But she didn’t seem to care at all—just sprinting happily down the sidewalk as if this were some kind of game. When she turned a corner and disappeared from sight, you shouted again.

    “Bubbles, stop!”

You ran around the same corner, and the next thing you saw was Bubbles, who had finally come to a stop—in the arms of a man.

He was tall, with a buzz cut and sunglasses, and he carried Bubbles as if it were second nature.

“God, I’m so sorry. She usually doesn’t run off,” you said as you approached him.

The guy looked up from your puppy and smiled. “Don’t worry—that’s how puppies are.” He glanced back at the dog.

“You’re lucky I stopped her, though. I suppose you would’ve run through the whole of Los Angeles if I hadn’t,” he added.

“Yeah, I probably would have. Thanks for catching her. I guess I owe you now.”

He chuckled and turned back to you.
“Don’t mention it. I’m Drew, by the way. And you are?”
